I had such a blast learning about Nate Paul and I know you're going to enjoy reading his answers as much as I did! Nate is not only a fabulous vocal coach, but he’s also a total hoot. Get ready to dive into his favorite songs, teaching philosophies, and more. Enjoy!

1. What is your favorite song?

“At the moment, I am absolutely obsessed with ‘Rises the Moon’ by Liana Flores. I think it’s a special moment in commercial music where poetic prosody and imagery within the text are beautifully illustrated by haunting vocal melodies and equally auspicious guitar accompaniment.”

2. What is your favorite part of singing to teach?

“I love discussing how singing is a full-body activity, and how the voice is connected, both physically and emotionally, to our entire being. The treatment of our voice can cross over into how people take care of themselves, which I find to be an extremely vital skill for our youth to practice!”

3. Who is your favorite artist?

“I’m definitely a fan of Vulfpeck and the singers they collaborate with. I would recommend them to anyone, and they have the best live album I’ve ever listened to!”

4. When did you know you wanted to teach voice?

“I knew I wanted to teach voice when I began transitioning voice types from being a baritone to a tenor. That lengthy process gave me a definitive understanding of how important it is for singers to have a teacher with a solid functional knowledge of the voice. Also, I think as teachers, we adopt qualities from our previous mentors, so I’d credit my high school band teacher, Mr. McCurry, as someone who inspired me to be a teacher, mentor, and friend to my students.”

5. What is your favorite food?

“Anything sweet or spicy, preferably both of those flavors together! Korean spicy wings are a winner any day of the week.”

6. What is your favorite season? Why?

“Summer and autumn are a toss-up for me! I spend so much time outside during the summer, but I love the fashion of autumn so much.”

7. What is your favorite TV show OF ALL TIME?

“I can easily get lost in Avatar: The Last Airbender. I grew up watching this show as a kid and as I get older, I find new things I relate to every time I watch it. Plus, the musical motifs in the show are so intentional that I’m dazzled every time I rewatch it and reminded of how the music made me feel when I was a child!”

8. If you could sing with any artist for the Super Bowl Halftime Show, which artist would you choose?

“JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE!!! That man is suave, and he puts on an amazing show!”

9. Are you a morning or a night person?

“Both! I go to bed late and wake up early! I’d say I’m more productive in the evenings though.”

10. What do you think is the most challenging aspect of singing these days?

“I think the most challenging aspect of singing is being versatile as a performer while also being authentic and vocally healthy within ALL genres of vocal music. Imagine a singer performing Bruno Mars with an operatic sound; there’d be no SOUL! However, in today’s market, you should be able to crossover into other genres with a sense of ease so you can go where the singing jobs are in your area.”
