Finding your “true” voice

How do you go about finding your “true voice?”

There’s a lot of speculation about this and most vocal coaches have strong opinions about this…🙄

Your “true voice” is where you feel most confident

it’s where you feel your most authentic

it’s where you have the most range

…blah, blah, BLAH….

To all this, I say, “That’s crap.”

I think finding your “true” voice does require confidence, authenticity, and a certain level of vocal technique.

But, how do you get there? That’s the hard part.

Getting to your “true” voice requires just a couple things….

  1. To find your true voice you must warm up. This is critical. Without a vocal warmup, it’s like trying to decide whether you’re a sprinter or marathon-er without stretching your legs. That’s no bueno. To get a vocal warmup, click here and get started. To really gain insight into your voice, warming up will give you clarity on what your voice is built to do.
  2. Sing different genres! That’s right - have fun singing styles you didn’t grow up listening to. I have taught hundreds of singers, and every single one has gravitated towards the style(s) they listened to during their formative years. There’s nothing wrong with this, of course, but mix it up! If you grew up on Britney Spears, you may be surprised to find out you sound great singing disco…who knew, right?!
  3. Without turning on your earbuds, try looking at lyrics. Just read them. What lyrics mean the most to you? Try singing styles with meaningful lyrics, you may surprise yourself.

You’ll be well on your way to finding your true voice when you start with these steps.

The greatest singers have open minds and hearts, so enjoy this investigative journey to discovering your TRUE voice.

As you walk through these steps and commit to your voice, the authenticity, confidence, and vocal technique will come. Stick with it, you got this!
